Root Canal Treatment

The main purpose of Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) is to save unhealthy teeth. In root canal treatment, the vessels and nerves in the diseased tooth are removed. The resulting cavity is filled with suitable canal filling materials, gutta-percha. In this way, even if the tooth is no longer lifeless, its presence and function in the mouth are preserved.

Although endodontists are often associated with infection and severe decay, they can also try to save teeth damaged by injury through root canal treatment. Caries reaching or approaching the pulp necessitate root canal treatment. Rather than extracting a diseased or damaged tooth, the endodontist removes the infection and decay to prevent further damage to the inside of the tooth.

In such a case, there may be sensitivity and pain in the tooth. There may be pain related to pressure or temperature change; Spontaneous and persistent pain may also occur.

In cases where root canal treatment is avoided, the drugs you will use without the knowledge of the dentist will only relieve your pain for a while. The untreated tooth will continue to cause discomfort after a while. Antibiotics used for a long time make the infection more resistant and bring bigger problems in the long run, making the treatment of the tooth difficult. If pulpitis is not treated, inflammation accumulates at the root tip and an abscess may form. Therefore, destruction occurs in the bone tissue around the tooth and if treatment is not performed for a long time, the tooth may need to be extracted. In cases where the root canal treatment fails or the second time root canal treatment cannot be performed, a surgical intervention, called apical resection, may be required. Anesthesia is given before starting the treatment. In this way, the patient does not feel any pain or pain during the procedure. There may be mild pain or tenderness due to the procedures performed after the treatment. However, this situation is temporary, after a short time, there will be no tenderness or pain. Success in root canal treatment is possible by cleaning the tooth up to the root end, shaping the canal walls, and filling the canal in a way that does not leave any gaps up to the root end. Root canal treatment should be completed in a single session. However, in cases where the inside of the canal cannot be dried, in cases where there is bleeding or inflammation in the canal, root canal treatment may take several sessions. Depending on how the outside of the tooth looks, the endodontist will work with the dentist to finish the treatment by placing a crown or other type of dental restoration on the tooth to protect it. In order to prevent other problems that may arise in the future, it is necessary to pay attention to oral care and to be examined by the dentist regularly.
